Tony Dinh launched Xnapper, a screenshot tool, on Product Hunt and hit #1 Product of the Day: 1,428 votes, 6.2K website visits, 164 sales and $4,212. He credits the launch-day email to his beta list most.

01The problem

Turn a launch day into sales, not just upvotes.

02The experiment

Before launch he built a beta list, emailing changelogs every 1–2 weeks. On launch day he emailed the beta users, tweeted asking people to reply with 👋 and DM'd each of them, and posted on Reddit (r/SideProject and r/macapps).

He skipped Hacker News because he didn't think the audience was a fit. The early-bird price was $20 per license.

04What worked — and what didn't

What worked

  • The launch-day email to his beta list, which he thinks mattered most
  • Emailing changelogs to beta users every 1–2 weeks before launch
  • Launch tweets asking people to reply, then DMing each one

What didn't work

  • Reddit got mixed reactions
  • He skipped Hacker News as a poor fit
